Adele Klapper '92, M.A. '99
Adele Klapper '92, M.A. '99 is the owner and president of Superior Sewing Machine & Supply, LLC, the company run by her late husband Herbert. Under Herbert’s leadership, Superior Sewing became an international leader in the distribution and sales of sewing machine parts, and is known for providing quality merchandise at a fair price.

Adele and Herbert were passionate art collectors. Every purchase they made was a team decision, he with a keen eye for value and quality, she with a deep appreciation for beauty. Adele has continued their pursuit of unique and meaningful works. In addition to maintaining their remarkable collection of European masters, featuring several renowned impressionist works, Adele works for Sotheby’s auction house, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Nassau County Museum of Art. Their works have been on display all over the world, and were loaned to Adelphi to celebrate the opening of the new Fine Arts and Facilities building in 2006.

Adele's favorite piece is undoubtedly Picasso's 1931 Tete de Femme, the over-sized plaster bust of his seventeen-year old mistress, Marie-Therese Walter. This sculpture perfectly blends the aesthetic appeal that Adele always prefers with the poignant human story underlying all the works in the Klapper collection. For Adele, the art is a monument to the deep and abiding love she and Herbert had for each other.

Adele's long-held of dream of attending college was fulfilled when she graduated with a B.A. in Art from Adelphi University in 1992, at the age of 62, and followed that with an M.A. in Art in 1999. Adele fondly remembers her wonderful professors and the genuine friendships she began with students of all ages.

Adele has been a generous supporter of and friend to Adelphi University. In 2005, she received the President's Medal of Merit, the highest award given by an Adelphi president. Adele also works with the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, the United Jewish Appeal, the Hadassah, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In honor of Herbert, Adele is a strong supporter of lung cancer research around the world.

Adele and Herbert have two daughters, Bonnie and Wendie, and a son-in-law Lonny, who assumed the management of Superior Sewing upon Herbert's retirement.
