Adelphi Announces Generous $1.1 Million Gift to Support Science Initatives

Garden City, NY
October 2005
Adelphi University has received a generous contribution of $ 1.1 million from former trustee Horace G. McDonell, Jr. '52, '02 (Hon.) and his wife, Eileen Romar McDonell. The McDonells' gift, the largest from a living alumni couple and fourth million dollar commitment in the last three years, will be used to renovate a general chemistry laboratory in Science Hall and to create endowed scholarships for students pursuing degrees in physics.
"During my career, I valued and benefited from the strong scientific foundation I received at Adelphi," said Mr. McDonell. "My wife Eileen and I are thrilled to partner with Adelphi to ensure that the University's sciences remain vibrant, robust, and affordable for today's students. We are pleased to know that chemistry, biology, and physics students, as well as nursing majors and others, will be able to participate in experiments in a state-of-the-art laboratory"
"This generous gift from the McDonells is a demonstration of their lifelong friendship to their University as well as to their commitment to preparing people for careers in science," said University Board of Trustees Vice-Chair Leon Pollack '63, former managing director of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.
The McDonells are strong proponents of the teaching and advancement of science. Soon after receiving his B.A. (physics) at Adelphi, Mr. McDonell joined the Perkin-Elmer Corporation, a leader in the fields of analytical instruments, fine optics, and electro-optical systems, where he served for 38 years, retiring as Chairman and CEO. This offered many opportunities for interaction with his company and his alma mater. In addition to his service as a member of Adelphi's Board of Trustees, he served on the boards of other non-profit organizations including Danbury Hospital, Datahr Rehabilitation Institute, and the American Electronics Association, where he also served as Chairman. In the corporate world he has been a director of Ethan Allen Interiors, Hubbell, Uniroyal, Etec, and Silicon Valley Group corporations.
The McDonell gift will help Adelphi enhance the academic distinction of its programs in the natural sciences. When acknowledging the McDonells' gift, President Robert A. Scott said, "Adelphi's has a long history of excellence in the sciences. It is through strong partnerships, like ours with the McDonells, that we are able to ensure the vitality of our academic heritage. We are grateful for their support, friendship, and leadership."
Mr. McDonell earned his degree in physics from Adelphi in 1952. In recognition of his numerous contributions to the University, the scientific community, and the community at large, Adelphi awarded Mr. McDonell an honorary doctorate in May 2002. The McDonells currently reside in Naples, FL and Chatham, MA.
