Adelphi Announces Generous Contribution to Support a New Child Activity Center and the Development of a Parenting Center

Garden City, NY
September 2005

---
Adelphi University has received a generous contribution of $250,000 from the Doreen Downs Miller Foundation to support the redesign of the University's Child Activity Center and to establish an interdisciplinary parenting institute. Doreen Downs Miller M.B.A. '86, is an Adelphi alumna and her gift will enable the University to proceed with its plans for a new early childhood learning center and development of a parenting center.

Located on Adelphi's Garden City campus, and open to Adelphi faculty, staff, students, and area residents, the Child Activity Center provides daytime child care services to children between the ages of three to five years. The new 7,000 square-foot facility will create a state-of-the-art learning environment for the children, while allowing for integration of the University's early childhood academic programs into the Center's curriculum and philosophy.

The new parenting institute will build upon the research initiated by Adelphi faculty in the highly-regarded Schools of Education, Nursing, and Social Work and the Derner Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies.

In making her gift, Ms. Miller stressed the transformation of the University since the arrival of President Robert A. Scott.  She told him, "the University is flourishing under your outstanding, values-oriented leadership." "I care deeply about creating environments for children that contribute to healthy developmental outcomes," added Ms. Miller. "The potential to create an innovative interdisciplinary academic program is exceptional."

"We are grateful to Doreen for her generosity and her vision," said Dr. Scott. "Thanks to her leadership, the children and families of our region will gain a tremendous resource here on our campus." The Child Activity Center has been providing part- and full-day programs for pre-schoolers for more than 25 years. Graduate students in Adelphi's Schools of Education and Social Work, and the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, participate in field experiences at the Center, thereby enhancing their knowledge of child development and early childhood curriculum.
