Research Interests

As a cognitive neuroscientist I investigate how human psychological processes such as perceiving and thinking are generated by the brain. My primary current research interests are brain processes underlying the integration of information from different sensory modalities. This important function called "multisensory integration", is essential for interpersonal communication and social behavior and is thought to be impaired in some psychiatric and developmental disorders, specifically Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This research has a strong translational component, which requires close collaboration with clinicians, an interdisciplinary team of scientists as well as the use of a range of technologies. My work involves the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to assess different aspects of brain structure and connectivity as well as brain activity while participants are engaged in tasks in the MRI scanner (functional MRI). Additionally, I collect genetic information from participants in an effort to explore links between genetic makeup, brain structure/function, mental processes and behavior. This multidisciplinary approach aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of brain mechanisms underlying mental processes and behavior in healthy individuals and in those suffering from mental disorders, particularly Autism.
