Personal Statement

I approach the teaching of history with the assumption that "facts" do not interpret themselves and are relatively meaningless unless used as a basis for understanding how cultures and societies function. So I urge students to use their interpretive powers, and we read a lot since otherwise there is nothing to interpret. And fairly lengthy term papers are required as well.

Teaching Specializations / Interests

Courses which I am qualified to teach (which means areas I have published in)include: America in the 1960s; History of American Families; Women's History; History of the American Revolution and Constitution; History of American Education; American Intellectual History (Or History of Ideas).
