Personal StatementMy first professional career was in the public schools as a school psychologist and then as an administrator for special education. While there I worked closely with students, parents, teachers and administrators. It was clear to me that the teachers and administrators usually needed to know more to effectively work with students with exceptional learning needs. At times I was also concerned about the willingness, or lack thereof, to provide instruction that would be appropriate for a wide range of learners. Working at the University gives me an opportunity to impact the education of exceptional learners in a more preventative way by better preparing teachers for the challenges they will face in today's schools.
I now teach the Child with Special Needs, the Introduction to Special Education, Formal and Informal Methods of Assessment courses and other special education courses. I hope, through those courses, to add to the knowledge and skills of future educators.
