Right on Time
Graphic design major Robin Iovino '08 has an impeccable gift for being in the right place at the right time.
It was an instance of this fortuitous timing that led her to enter a logo competition for breast cancer awareness, a cause that resonates deeply with Ms. Iovino since she lost her mother to the disease.
"I told Professor Flashner, who was behind the project, how unbelievably perfect timing this was," she says, referring to Graphic Design Studio Director Dale Flashner. "If I had come a year earlier or later, I would have missed this great opportunity. It is very special to me and is always on my mind."
Ms. Iovino's pink polka-dot design for Creative Cups, an innovative art exhibition to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, was chosen as the winning logo. Even though she’s graduating from the Graphic Design Program at Adelphi, she plans to continue to lend her time and considerable talents for the worthy cause.
She fell in love with Adelphi during a campus visit. "I brought my portfolio, and I just loved their art department," she says. Ms. Iovino credits her professors and fellow students with helping to make her feel comfortable very quickly.
Managing a household and carrying a full course load was not easy, but with the support of her family, Ms. Iovino was able to persevere and thrive. "It took help, patience, and a lot of pizza deliveries," she says. Ms. Iovino credits her time management skills as factor in her success. After commencement, Ms. Iovino plans to freelance and build her résumé.
Ms. Iovino firmly believes that hard work will pay off.
"At the end of the day, if you can honestly say that you worked hard and did your very best, you should be proud and it will always come back to you and then some," she says.
