Profession
Director, Environmental Affairs, Occupational Health and Safety, Colgate-Palmolive Company. I've been with the Colgate-Palmolive Company since 1996.
Why Adelphi
What drew me to Adelphi was its marine science program, which allowed me to study the chemistry and ecology of Long Island's Great South Bay. At the time, Adelphi had a Marine Science Research Center. We had the opportunity to do classroom work at Adelphi's Garden City campus and lab and field work in Long Island’s Great South Bay.
Favorite Classes
Evolution, Statistics, Ecology, and Marine Science
Most Influential Faculty
Biology Professors Algernon ("Jerry") Churchill, James Dooley, Joseph Napolitano, and George Russell taught students how to think, not just how to do well on the test. The constant interaction among students and faculty made Adelphi a truly stimulating intellectual environment. The University provided me with an opportunity not only to learn, but to learn how to think.
Fondest Adelphi Memories
I really enjoyed the academic emphasis in the classroom combined with being able to go out and actually practice what we had learned. I fondly remember serving as a teaching assistant for George Russell and Jerry Churchill. While at Adelphi, I was a recipient of a New York State Sea Grant, which funded the research I conducted my second year at Adelphi. After defending my thesis, I was proud to have it published under my and Jerry Churchill's names. I remember playing a lot of sports, with both graduate and undergraduate students. My daughter was also born while I was at Adelphi. Overall, I had a great experience at the University—from being in class and lab, to interacting with faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students, to life outside the classroom
Favorite Places on Campus
My triangle world at Adelphi was the Science Building, the Rathskeller, and the Woodruff Hall gym.
Proudest Accomplishment
Environmental science has been the focus of my career since 1971, so I would say I'm most proud of picking something, pursuing my education, and remaining focused on it throughout my career. I have a deep commitment to making the environment better. I am proud to have been able to achieve that while successfully growing my career and achieving a role of leadership and responsibility at the Colgate-Palmolive Company.
Hobbies and Interests
Sports. I used to play a lot of basketball. While I don't play anymore, I founded the "Over 40" League in Rockville Centre, New York, and am still involved in the organization. I go to the gym nearly every day, enjoy sailing, and have also started hosting wine tasting parties.
Philanthropic Philosophy
As an undergraduate or graduate student, you are focused on your future—getting through school and starting your career. Once you are on your feet and have the ability to recognize where you are and what you have achieved, it is important to recognize the role Adelphi played in your successes, and to show your appreciation for that. I think we often take for granted the donors behind the scenes whose support makes everything happen at Adelphi. We need to think about how we can help the University to ensure that new students receive the same opportunities we experienced at Adelphi. All gifts, no matter what size, make a big difference at our University.
Recent Giving
Established the Algernon Coolidge Churchill Endowed Scholarship Fund; Charles H. Levermore Society gifts to the Annual Fund
Why I Created an Endowed Scholarship Fund
I have stayed connected to Adelphi throughout the years, by attending the Joseph J. Napolitano Memorial Lecture Series, through my continued friendships with Jerry Churchill and George Russell, and contributing to the Annual Fund. Last year Adelphi asked me if I would be interested in making a larger gift to the University. Together Adelphi and I came up with the idea of establishing an endowed scholarship in Professor Churchill's name.
Jerry Churchill and Adelphi played vital roles in the accomplishments I have achieved throughout my career, and shaping the person I have become. Once Adelphi asked me to consider making a significant contribution to the University, it struck me that I wanted to ensure the Adelphi experience that I enjoyed continues for future generations of students. Endowing a scholarship in my mentor's name was a way for me to do that, while cementing Jerry Churchill’s legacy at Adelphi.
I hadn't even considered the impact my gift could make at Adelphi until I had a conversation with the University. It was Adelphi merely asking me to consider making a contribution that brought my support of the Algernon Coolidge Churchill Endowed Scholarship Fund to fruition.
Why I Give
Adelphi helped me get where I am today. It's my time to help give future students the same opportunities that I am so grateful to have received at Adelphi.
