At Adelphi, learning takes place as much outside the classroom as in it. Adelphi students and alumni often refer to life lessons and skills gained through their participation in recreational activities, fitness programs, and intercollegiate athletic competition.

Recreation and Sports Center
A new 76,000 square-foot Recreation and Sports Center will extend from Woodruff Hall’s south end, with a bright glass-enclosed atrium connecting both buildings.
A three-story, three-court gymnasium, which can be converted to a 2,200-seat arena for large competitions and events, will better accommodate recreational and intercollegiate athletes as well as health and physical education students. Students will be able to hold meetings and larger events in the Panther Lounge. New locker rooms will be dedicated to recreational athletes, varsity athletes, visiting teams, visiting coaches, and referees.
With the new spaces, Adelphi will be able to host NCAA championship games and local high school tournaments, as well as other community events.
Geothermal heating and cooling, energy efficient windows and lighting, and other environmentally friendly construction elements will enable Adelphi to qualify the sustainably-designed building for a silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Renovation of Woodruff Hall
Woodruff Hall gymnasium, now more than 75 years old is stretched to capacity.
In fall 2006, nearly 300 students were enrolled in the highly regarded academic programs in health, physical education, and sports management, making them the largest of the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education’s undergraduate programs.
A complete renovation of historic Woodruff Hall will make the building better able to serve both academic programs and recreational activities. Renovations will provide for new classrooms and enhanced weight and fitness areas. A state-of-the-art Human Performance Laboratory will be complemented by fully accessible cardiovascular and adult fitness programs, which will triple in size. A modernized swimming pool and new racquetball and squash courts are also planned.

Outdoor Sports Complex & Parking Structure
To continue to attract and retain top student athletes, and support the continued success of many of the University’s teams, new outdoor practice and competition fields are required.
Stiles Field, Adelphi's main outdoor competition space for lacrosse and soccer, will be relocated next to the south side of the new recreation and sports center.
A change to a premiere synthetic all-weather surface, that utilizes recycled rubber products, will allow for year-round practice and competition, and a lighting system will make evening practices and competition possible for the first time in Adelphi’s history. A one-level parking structure for 310 cars will be located beneath the field.
