Dr. Elizabeth Scannell-DeschThe Adelphi University Hudson Valley Center is pleased to announce Dr. Elizabeth Scannell-Desch, as the nursing coordinator for undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing.

Dr. Scannell-Desch is a retired colonel in the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps. For 25 years, she served her country holding many key leadership positions, including command nurse executive for the entire Air Force Reserve at Headquarters, USAF – the Pentagon, where she was senior nurse advisor to the Reserve Commanding General. Most recently, Dr. Scannell-Desch was tenured professor and chairperson of the Division of Nursing at her alma mater, Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY. She has also taught at Rutgers University as assistant professor of nursing and at University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca, Romania as visiting professor of nursing. 

Throughout her career, Dr. Scannell-Desch has earned numerous awards for teaching excellence, military distinction, and clinical research. Dr. Scannell-Desch has authored more than 15 data based publications in peer-reviewed national and international nursing journals. She has presented her research at the American Nurses Association, Eastern Nursing Research Society, European Nursing Historical Society, American Association of the History of Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau International nursing conferences. This summer, she will present at the American Association of Midwives annual conference in Long Beach, CA, and in Kolding, Denmark at the international meeting of the Danish Nursing Historical Society and the European Association for the History of Nursing. 

Earlier this year, Dr. Scannell-Desch co-wrote a book, Nurses in War: Voices from Iraq and Afghanistan, with her sister, a professor and certified nurse midwife. The pair was motivated by the fact that there is so little written about military nurses in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their research consisted of speaking with dozens of U.S. military nurses about working in Iraq and Afghanistan. The book highlights 37 stories of nurses’ deployment in those war zones from 2003 to 2011.  

Dr. Scannell-Desch obtained her B.S. in nursing from Mount Saint Mary College, an MSN as an adult oncology clinical nurse specialist from University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. from Georgia State University in family and community nursing research. She has also received several diplomas while serving in the military from 1972 to 1997. Most recently, Dr. Scannell-Desch obtained a certificate from Rutgers University College of Nursing in post-masters nursing education. 

Adelphi’s Hudson Valley Center offers programs in alignment with the University’s Center for Health Innovation. The Hudson Valley campus offers an R.N. to B.S. and several graduate programs in nursing and an M.S.W. program.
