SBIRT training provides social workers with evidence-based resources to work effectively with clients at risk for substance use disorders in a variety of settings (e.g., hospitals, outpatient or primary care settings, community health and mental health centers).
Participants will learn how to screen for substance use and assess the level of risk; briefly intervene to enhance client insight and motivation toward behavioral change using methods such as Motivational Interviewing, and refer to treatment clients needing specialized care. This training equips participants with skills applicable to clients facing a variety of issues.

Learning Objectives:
- Identify at least two screening tools and their applied uses for clients using substances.
- Name at least three principles of Motivational Interviewing as a brief intervention.
- Differentiate between at-risk clients and clients in need of referrals to treatment.
Instructor Bio
Nicole Sullivan, LMSW
Nicole Sullivan is a licensed master social worker. She completed the Accelerated Master’s of Social Work from Adelphi University after obtaining a Bachelors’ degree in Biology from Quinnipiac University. Following the completion of her Master’s, she completed her CASAC at Adelphi University which has allowed her to specialize in the treatment of substance use disorders. She also completed a specialization in trauma and is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. Nicole is a member of National Association of Social Workers and currently works at Adelphi University within the Institute for Adolescent Trauma, Treatment and Training in addition to private practice. She has trained hundreds of Professionals in the treatment of substance use disorders and it is excited to host this virtual workshop on SBIRT.

Successful completion for the award of approved continuing education credits requires attendance at the entire training/workshop and submission of a completed evaluation form. See full credentialing information and CEUs New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education hours. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.”
Cancellation Policy
No refund can be made for cancellation seven or fewer working days before the onset of the postgraduate certificate program. Cancellations occurring more than seven working days before the onset of the program will result in a refund less the amount of the deposit. Requests for refunds must be received in writing.
