Outdoor Sculpture Biennial Archives

Jerelyn Hanrahan
Jerry Curl began as a stone which I selected in Massa, Italy, in 1989, where I began this work in my Pietrasanta, Italy, studio. The work was then shipped out to Livorno along with nine tons of stone, delivered to the lower east side of New York, where I maintained a studio. I continued to develop the sculpture, but due to many years of living in Europe, and travel, the sculpture was never completed. When selected for the 2008 Adelphi Biennial by director Richard Vaux, Jerry Curl was then completed on-site for the Biennial venue.

Contextually Jerry Curl is part of the “Protection Series”: a series of sculptures begun in 1991, upon the birth of my daughter Fiona Rae Brunner. This theme continues to be redefined, altered in a variety of works.
