The spiral, the turn or twist, is a sign of growth and life. The trunk of a tree is turned, either left or right - the bones in legs and arms are twisted - the DNA chain is a spiral. A straight form is hard and weak and can easily be broken. The spiral has strength and flexibility...A winning structure.

During the 1980s, I tried to create a stone sculpture that seemed alive. I found that the form would seem to shift when observed from different view points if the carved form was less than 90 degrees.
